1970 Gibson electric acoustics catalogue

The Gibson electric acoustics catalogue from 1970

This 1970 Gibson ES-175 is a real beauty. The finish would be known as Cherry Sunburst in the 1970s (from 1971?), however at this stage it was just a variety of Sunburst along with the more typical amber to near black burst. Natural and Sunburst are the only options in the 1970 price lists and the 1970 Gibson electric acoustics catalogue. ES-175D shipping figures show 298 Sunburst instruments against 54 Natural for 1970.

Typical 1970 features: three-piece mahogany neck, six-digit stamped serial number with MADE IN USA below it. 1950s style tailpiece, witch-hat control knobs, crown inlay positioned centrally on the headstock.

Other features unchanged from earlier ES-175 versions: maple top, back and sides. Bound front and back, with a bound neck and split parallelogram inlays. Patent number humbucker pickups (part numbers 13515 and 13516) and Kluson 320-VP machine heads.

Gibson Steve Howe Signature ES-175 Guitar
Gibson Steve Howe Signature ES-175 Guitar Vintage Sunburst

Independent volume and tone controls with a 3-way toggle. Deep, rich tone rings out from a full hollowbody with a deep cutaway for easy high-fret access.
