1972 Gibson SG catalogue page 5 - Gibson SG pro

Gibson 1972 solidbody catalogue. page 5. Details of the Gibson SG Pro. The SG Pro was announced in June of 1971, and manufactured between mid 1971 and mid 1972. In many ways it was a renamed and redesigned SG Special which was dropped at the same time. Like the Special it came equipped with two P90s, and vibrola, but it also underwent the changes that were being introduced in many Gibsons at the time; smaller raised pickguard (rather than full face), surrounds on humbuckers, Bigsby (rather than Maestro) vibrola, and front-routed control panel. It did get an intonatable bridge for the first time. Examine the 1970 spec Gibson SG Special for comparison

Gibson Custom Shop L-4 CES 3-Pickup
Gibson Custom Shop L-4 CES 3-Pickup Vintage Sunburst one of a kind electric guitar

Even though Gibson had originally created the laminated top ES-175 in 1948 to fill the need for an electric version of the acoustic, carved-top L-4C, the demand still existed for an electric L-4 with a fully carved top. In the late 1950s, Gibson answered this call by releasing small runs of variously configured L-4 CES guitars, some with Charlie Christian pickups, some with alnico pickups, and some with humbuckers. This Gibson L-4 CES 3-Pickup Vintage Sunburst one-of-a-kind electric guitar is a modification of the final incarnation of the L-4 CES with 3 - '57 Classic humbuckers and solid mahogany back and sides.

The Thunderbird IV debuted in 1963 with the original Firebird guitar series. The most highly respected of all Gibson basses, it was reissued in 1987 with original reverse body styling and TB Plus ceramic magnet humbuckers. Its thunderous output is enhanced by a 9-ply mahogany-and-walnut neck that extends through the body. Mahogany wings, an ebony fretboard, and black chrome hardware provide stunning dark looks. 34" scale, black top-hat knobs with inserts, Schaller tuners, and 3-way adjustable tailpiece. Gibson Faded SG Special
Gibson Faded SG Special

The Special has always represented a combination of looks, functionality, and value, and the new Faded SG Special maintains this tradition. Under its attractive faded finish, it is the traditional SG, with mahogany body and neck, tune-o-matic/stopbar bridge, and alnico 490 pickups. Its faded finish gives it the look of an axe that started its rockin' days in the '60s.
